Persistence in STEM

Image
Woman Daring Greatly      Daring Greatly has inspired a new way of thinking for me. Before I was really afraid to be vulnerable, especially as a woman of color in technology. I was vulnerable as a chance to fail and look like a dummy. After reading the book I see vulnerability in a new light. Vulnerability is an emotional risk that takes courage not shame. Out of being vulnerable one can find innovations, creativity, and change. There's nothing stronger than daring greatly to fail. I now want to inspire others to take risks and persist in a career in STEM despite stereotypes. The only way to stay down is to not try.

My Mindset

I would say I have a growth mindset, but I grew up with a fixed mindset. Going through elementary and high school, things came to me naturally. I always caught on easily. Therefore, I would say I grew up with a fixed mindset. As I got into college I could no longer focus in class, things became harder to understand. I had to believe I could learn the requirements to pass classes or chose to fail. I began to force myself to study and work less hours. I defiantly paid off. I am ready to graduate this may. Being the the computer science field we will never stop learning and adapting to new technologies. I am very glad to have this new mindset because I will need it to succeed.

Mid-semester

This week I completed my first internship. After spring break I will start my second internship. The internships have gotten me excited about starting my career. During spring break I will be applying to different jobs in my field. I am going to focus most of my efforts on a cyber security, data analyst, and Developer roles. These jobs align with my degree and I feel will be a good fit for me.     The most challenging part of this week was keeping up with all my due dates. I had two A secession classes. All my work was due Monday March 1st. I also had new difficult work projects that made my head spin. On top of that I had to water my relationships. Overall, I am happy to put this week behind me and cant wait to start new adventures after spring break.
